Maine Lab Rescue

Windham, ME

About

Maine Lab Rescue was founded in May, 2012. We are a foster based, mostly volunteer organization. Rescue efforts are focused on saving Labs and Lab mixes from high-kill shelters or other undesirable circumstances in the south. While we focus on the Labrador Retriever and Lab mixes, we also rescue other mixed breed dogs/puppies and cats/kittens, we use our resources to help where we can. We hold a valid permit to import dogs and cats into the state, issued by Maine Department of Agriculture. Maine Lab Rescue is a private, mostly volunteer rescue. We do not receive funding from federal, state or local governments. Sponsorships of pull fees, vetting and transportation are always welcome. As a private organization, contributions made to Maine Lab Rescue are not tax deductible.

Adoption process

Our process for submitting applications and inquiries has changed. We are only able to accept applications for pets currently posted in our adoptables album on Facebook or our Petfinder listings, we are no longer accepting general applications for a future pet. We prioritize and limit application processing to only those applicants who are interested in a specific dog or cat currently available for adoption, and then we process in the order the inquiry is received. Having an already approved application does not change where a person is on a particular dog’s list of interested families. Please do not apply for a pet if you are not able to adopt immediately, we are not able to hold pets for a future meet and greet, nor are we able to hold adopted pets for a future pick up. Before submitting an application, please make sure your references (landlord, personal and veterinary) are aware that you are looking to adopt a pet and that we may be calling for a reference. Please note, our volunteers may call from area codes other than Maine's area code, 207. If we are unable to reach your references, the person calling will leave a voice mail, if it is set up on the phone. If personal references fail to call us back, the application remains in a pending status and cannot be processed further. Applications are processed in the order received. If you are interested in adopting one of our pets who is currently listed as available for adoption, we recommend you include a completed application with your email. We are currently only able to process the first few applications for a particular pet. While we'd like to answer all application emails quickly, due to volunteer availability, we aren't always able to do so in a timely manner. Please note, if your application is approved and you are notified that you are first in line for one of the pets you are interested in, you should be prepared to meet and, barring anything unforeseen, adopt that pet within a couple of days of notification at either our next scheduled adoption event or by appointment, depending on foster availability. As previously mentioned, we are unable to hold pets for future meet and greet or adoption, nor can we hold adopted pets for future pick up. Please allow up to a week, or more in some cases, for us to process your application, we are primarily a volunteer organization and at certain times can receive very high volumes of applications and emails. Email is our primary method of communication, please be sure to check yours regularly, especially toward the end of the week. If using your work email, please make sure you have access to it outside of normal business hours, or when you are on vacation, otherwise please use an alternate email address for all communication, including application submission. Submitting an application does not guarantee the ability to adopt, nor does it place a particular pet you are interested in on hold.
