About

Journey Home Dog Rescue is a volunteer-based IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that began in the summer of 2005 with a rescue mission to Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. Our immediate goals at that time were to: Transfer as many dogs as possible out of "high-kill" dog pounds in the region into a temporary "no-kill" shelter; Transport as many dogs as possible back to Maine for re-homing. During that first road trip, we rescued 70 dogs from imminent euthanasia. We also relocated and helped re-home 14 of them to the greater Portland area. In the months following the storm, we traveled back to the Gulf Coast region to work with other animal welfare groups as they continued to rescue, reunite, and re-home animals left homeless by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Today, our organization continues to be committed to arranging a "journey home" for local surrenders as well as for dogs in shelters that we have partnered with. We work to find permanent homes or foster care, transport as needed, and provide veterinary care. Journey Home Dog Rescue often supports southern shelters because of the pet overpopulation crisis and extremely high euthanization rate in that region. We believe that compassion has no borders and we are committed to creating a more humane world for all.
