Berkeley Humane is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization governed by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors that work on behalf of Berkeley Humane and the animals in our community. We have provided over 125 years of trusted service and dedication to Berkeley and the East Bay.

Adoption process

Berkeley Humane believes in an adoption process that carefully matches the lifestyle and expectations of adopters with the needs of our animals. This ensures a successful adoption and helps pets remaining in the new homes for the rest of their lives. When you express an interest in adopting, our staff will ask you questions about what you're looking for, your home, lifestyle, and household, in order to suggest appropriate pets or determine a specific animal's suitability for your home.
