The Washington County Animal Shelter works to lower the number of animal nuisance problems in the county and to increase the number of animals returned to their homes or adopted into loving homes. In 2015, we placed over 1,000 homeless pets in new homes.
Start by asking yourself what kind of pet best suits your personality and living situation. Do you have the time and money to dedicate to a dog or cat? Do you rent, and does your landlord allows pets? Do you want an active pet or a couch potato? Once you answer these questions, take a look at the pets available at our shelter online or in person. Either way, we recommend you meet with the dog or cat before making any decisions. Finally, fill out a pet adoption application. If you rent, our staff will verify with your landlord that you can have a pet. We will also check that any other pets you have are spayed or neutered and up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. You must be at least 18 years old to adopt a cat or 21 years old to adopt a dog. Our standard adoption fees are $45 for cats and $65 for dogs. This includes: Flea and tick treatment; Heart worm testing; Initial vaccines and boosters, including rabies; Spay or neuter; Microchip implant
We adopted two of the best dogs from your shelter! One, a male Beagle; the other a mixed-breed, senior female who'd broken a leg (poor thing!). I wanted the female, my husband wanted the male. We're all doing swimmingly, now.
