About

Founded in 1957, Delaware Humane Association (DHA) is Delaware’s premiere nonprofit no kill animal care and adoption center, serving a four state area. We are committed to providing for the needs of homeless and owned dogs and cats in our community. Each year, hundreds of animals come to DHA in search of a warm bed, good meal, and most importantly, a new home. Our dedicated staff and volunteers work hard to ensure that each animal receives the best care possible during his/her stay at our adoption shelter. We’re committed to preparing all adoptable dogs and cats for a new home by keeping them well-groomed, giving them daily exercise and affection, and providing obedience training and any necessary medical care. DHA serves the community by offering affordable spay/neuter services, low cost vaccination clinics, and a pet food pantry. We receive no government funding, and rely on the support of the community in the form of volunteers, private donations, bequests, grants, fundraising events and our Helping Hands Club to complete our mission.

Adoption process

Step 1: Find out what you’re looking for! Browse our Cats & Dogs to see which pets are available for adoption and which center they are located or being fostered through. Step 2: Since majority of our animals are in foster homes, you will need to submit an animal-specific adoption application. Step 3: If you are a match, we will reach out to you and this pet’s foster (if applicable), and make arrangements to meet and ideally take home from there! Step 5: Delaware residents must purchase a dog license if interested in adopting a dog. Out-of-state adopters will need to purchase a license separately, if required. Step 6: Complete your adoption and bring your new pet home! (Please note: A collar and leash are required to bring your new dog or puppy home (a harness/carrier may also be requested for specific dogs). An appropriate carrier is required to take your new cat or kitten home).

How do I see what animals you have for adoption? can't find them, just referrals to other shelters.
