Creek Bend Sanctuary

Currently located in Mobile, Alabama, Mr. and Mrs. Duniven have for years opened their hearts and their home to wayward animals wherever they happened to be on the map. Once they relocated to Mobile, Al the need to create Creek Bend Animal Sanctuary became abundantly clear. Their purpose was to nurse lost, sick, or otherwise orphaned baby animals and give them a second chance at life. Kittens were the most frequent visitors at the Sanctuary. Because summers are long on the Alabama Gulf coast, kitten & puppy season lasts from March through November. With the April showers, it begins to rain kittens and puppies all over the area and calls start flooding in from people who find kittens in their garages, gardens, boats, sheds, etc. If at all possible every effort is made to find the mother and reunite them with their babies. Frequently, it is to no avail. Parental instincts are pretty strong in house cats and it's quite rare for a well kept cat to abandon it's offspring. But feral or homeless cats have hard lives. Often their first litter arrives when they are little more than kittens themselves. It's common for inexperience and the stresses of pregnancy to exhaust them to the point where they become ill and abandon their kittens. Other times domestic cat's litters contain one or more star crossed runts that will not survive unless they are hand raised by a caring human. The majority of the babies cared for at the sanctuary came from litters whose mother was ill, too young, or killed and unable to nurse to completion. The babies were bottle fed and tended to day and night simulating the care their natural mother would give. When they are old enough to eat solid food, and eliminate on their own, they are offered to good homes. In two years the number of kittens and puppies care for by the Dunivens hit upwards of 300! But, nowadays, the numbers of orphans taken into the sanctuary are few. Being impossible to personally care for them all, the Dunivens now seek to educate other rescuers, and the community on how to prevent unwanted litters and how to care for orphans when they are found.
