Friends of Marblehead's Abandoned Animals (FOMAA) is a non-profit organization established by volunteers that provides food, shelter, medical care, and good homes to the dozens of animals abandoned or brought to us each year. We are truly a no-kill shelter. Our operating expenses are underwritten by the generous donations of animal lovers and the fees we charge for adoption (which do not fully cover our costs, however). FOMAA was formed in 1993 for the sole purpose of raising funds for the care and placement of these abandoned animals. All money raised and goods donated are used for this purpose - we have no paid staff. FOMAA subsidizes the placement of animals in assisted living homes, with low income families and spay/neuter/release programs. Volunteers at the Marblehead Animal Shelter come in daily to walk the dogs, clean cat cages, medicate any sick animals, feed all the animals and provide lots of hugs, scratches, brushing and love to the animals. If you would like to help out, please drop by the shelter and fill out a volunteer application. You can also help by purchasing shelter merchandise at our fundraising events.
OUR PROCESS FOR ADOPTING: If submitting an application online you will receive a response, 24 to 48 hours after submitting, indicating that we have received your application. 1. All applications will be reviewed by our processing team. If the application is not filled out completely, we WILL NOT be able to process the application. 2. Once reviewed, you will receive a call or email from our team for a phone “chat”. 3. We will call your vet and your landlord (if you have one). Please notify them that we will be calling. If we are not able to reach them, we will not be able to continue with the adoption. 4. We receive hundreds of applications for our small shelter and, unfortunately, we cannot respond to them all. We have set up strict guidelines for the application process to try and make less work for our volunteers so thatthe process runs smoothly. 5. Finally, if approved, we will set up an appointment at the shelter for an interview. You and anyone else living inside the home with the pet should come to the appointment to see if the animal you have picked is a good match. If you are adopting (a cat) please bring an appropriate sized carrier. The larger the better. One that opens from the top is even better. Remember, most of our cats have come from the streets and are scared to be picked up and put into a carrier. Larger carriers are easier for our volunteers to place the cats into.
