About

Stratford Animal Control is a Division of the Stratford Police Department that enforces all State Laws and Town Ordinance related to animals. It is the responsibility of the Animal Control Division to investigate roaming dogs, animal bites, cruelty to animals, barking nuisance, unreasonable tethering or confining of a dog, town defecation ordinance, leash law, valid rabies vaccination, dog licensure and rabies related wildlife complaints that present an eminent danger to the public. It is the goal of the Animal Control Division to educate the public on humane animal care and to place impounded animals into qualified homes. The purpose of the Stratford Animal Control Facility is to hold the Town of Stratford's stray animals. We do not accept owner released animals. Stratford Animal Control works in conjunction with the Stratford Animal Rescue Society to facilitate and expedite adoptions of homeless animals into homes. In addition, together, we raise funds through private donations and public fundraisers to provide food and medical care for animals impounded at the Stratford Animal Control Facility.

Adoption process

Potential adopters must fill out an application and be approved. All household members must come in at one time to meet the animal. We will not show an animal until all members are present. Kittens are not available for adoption until they are 8 weeks and a minimum of 2 pounds. You must provide us with up-to-date veterinarian records for your current pet. If your current pets are not vaccinated or spayed/neutered your application may be denied. If you own a dog, you must provide a copy of your current dog license. If you have a dog and want to adopt a dog you must bring your current dog in for a meet & greet. Potential adopters must show proof of home ownership such as a tax bill or mortgage statement. Utility bills do not count as proof of homeownership. Renters must show a lease or a notarized letter from their landlord stating they are allowed to own a pet. Animals are not held while you are gathering the required documentation to have your application approved. Prospective Adopters must understand that animals will not be held for anybody and adoptions are approved at the discretion of the Animal Control Officers. In the case of multiple applications, for the same animal, the animal will be adopted out at the Animal Control Officers discretion. Every effort is made by the Animal Control Officers to match animals to proper homes and filing an application does in no way guarantee that the prospective adopter will be approved for such animal
