Adoption process

When you are ready to commit to a new best friend, consider making Santa Barbara County Animal Services your first stop. You may use Animal- Pet Search to preview the animals available for adoption. When you come into the shelter. Our helpful and friendly staff and volunteers will assist you to find just the right match for your family. Animal Services has hundreds of dogs, cats and rabbits available for adoption at all times. We also often have other animals such as birds, reptiles, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and other companion animals available for adoption. All potential adopters fill-out an Interest Survey to help with the matching process. Forms can be filled out and emailed or printed and mailed/brought into the Shelter. Once an Interest Survey is completed, we work with you to find a match that will be the appropriate temperament, age and compatibility for your household. Once identified, we would encourage you to bring your family down to meet the new pet, and if applicable, your current dog. All of our dogs and cats have been checked by a veterinarian, vaccinated and treated for fleas or worms, if needed. If your new pet has not already been spayed or neutered, the surgery will be scheduled by our customer care staff. You may pick-up your new family member after the spay/neuter surgery. Our staff and volunteers are available to answer questions or advise you on helpful hints for bringing your new pet home. Please feel free to ask questions about topics such as: Introducing a new animal to current pets; Litter box or house training; Behavior challenges such as chewing, digging, barking, scratching or jumping up; Animal proofing your house; Basic obedience training classes.
