About

Over 100 dogs are put to sleep in overcrowded Los Angeles area animal shelters every day. Many of these homeless dogs have been abandoned, abused or neglected, without ever knowing the love of a caring human being. Rover Rescue is a non-profit organization founded in 2001 to save as many homeless dogs as we can and place them in permanent and loving homes. We know that somewhere nearby a person or family yearns for one of these special dogs.

Adoption process

Step 1: The Application. Each prospective owner fills out an adoption application. All applicants must live in the Southern California area, and we ask that children in your home are at least five years old. We usually have no history of our rescue dogs and are therefore very careful about placing them in households with children. If you and the dog you would like to adopt seem to be well matched, we will respond to your application by email. Feel free to contact us at any time regarding the status of your application. Step 2: The Meeting. Once your application is approved, an appointment can be made to meet the dog. You can meet the dog privately or at one of our mobile adoption events, which are held every other Saturday. We require that everyone in the immediate family, including your current dog (if you have one) come to the appointment to meet your potential new dog. Adopting a dog is a big family decision and requires a commitment from everyone. If you currently own a dog, it must be up to date on shots, spayed/neutered and wear an i.d. tag. At the appointment, an adoption counselor from Rover Rescue will help you assess whether the dog is a good match for your lifestyle and your family. The counselor can also answer any questions you may have about the adoption process. Sometimes we will also proceed with a home check. Dogs from animal shelters can be amazing escape artists. By visiting your home, we can help you identify potential escape routes, and keep your new dog safe and secure. Step 3: The Adoption. Before you bring your new dog home, you must sign a contractual agreement with Rover Rescue. In addition, a $200.00 adoption donation is requested. In some cases, the adoption donation might be slightly higher for purebreds, puppies or if the medical expenses involved in rescuing your dog were excessive. The adoption donation is non-refundable. Please remember that adoption contributions barely cover our expenses. Additional donations are greatly appreciated and will help us continue our life-saving work. Rover Rescue will also provide you with dog care literature and pet insurance costing only $1 the first month. Step 4: Post Adoption Follow Up. Our goal is to help you enjoy life with your new dog to the fullest extent possible. If issues arise, or you just need some good advice, we are happy to do follow-up counseling by telephone. We can also suggest local dog trainers. IF ANYTHING PREVENTS YOU FROM KEEPING YOUR DOG Sometimes situations arise which can not be helped. If, for any reason, you are unable to keep a dog you’ve adopted from Rover Rescue, the dog can not be given away. It doesn’t matter how much time has passed since the adoption. You must either return the dog to Rover Rescue, or obtain approval from Rover Rescue to transfer ownership to a friend or relative.
