Founded in 1949, Humane Society of the Pikes Region is the largest animal welfare group for homeless and abused animals in Southern Colorado. HSPPR is a local, independent nonprofit not affiliated with national organizations such as ASPCA or Humane Society of the United States and relies on donations to fund its work. As an open admission shelter, no animal is ever turned away. Passionate and dedicated staff care for animals in distress, provide medical care for abused and injured animals, reunite lost pets with their owners, find loving homes for homeless animals, and investigate animal cruelty and enforce animal ordinances.

Adoption process

You can see all of our available pets online here. Although we update the database hourly, the animal you saw online may have found a home already. We're sorry, we process adoptions on a first-come, first-serve basis and can't place holds on animals by phone. The adoption process takes a minimum of 45 minutes to an hour. Please know on weekends, our busiest time, the adoption process may take 2 to 3 hours. At the shelter, you'll notice animals available for adoption have a kennel card with a brief description and an ID number. Write down this ID number so a matchmaker can give you more information about the pet. You will also be asked to complete an adopter survey to help our matchmakers assist you in finding a new pet that's the right fit for you and your family. When you find an animal that interests you, our matchmakers take you to visit your new friend in one of our get acquainted rooms. Due to the large number of visitors to the shelter, we must limit visitations to 2 animals per individual/family per day. Once your visit is complete, you will be directed to the customer service area to complete the adoption process.

A number of weeks ago, I reported 3 beautiful precious, abandoned cats (a huge tuxedo, an orange buff, and a young terrified calico) that were all dumped off in the North parking lot of Red Lobster in Pueblo, but nobody responded... If your staff traps and helps these precious cats, I would love to increase my star from 1 to 5

VERY DIFFICULT TO GET A HOLD OF ANYONE. THERE IS A GAL WHO IS COMING OUT TO 14OO ON SANTA FE IN EARLY SEPTEMBER TO TRAP SOME FERAL CATS. THERE IS A VERY SMALL BABY CAT W/O A MOTHER WHO NEEDS TRAPPED N0W! RUMOR HAS IT THAT A GUY AT THE USED CARLOT ACROSS THE STREET KILLED AT LEAST ONE LARGE CAT AND 8-9 babies. please come out and trap this baby so she/he can have a home. caroline luellen 248 9013 are you not available for a reason?!
