Midwest Shiba Inu Rescue (MSIR) was founded in 2002 and is a a registered 501(c)3 non-profit and licensed rescue. We help to save and place Shiba Inus throughout the Midwest, including Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana. MSIR does not have a facility - we are a network of volunteers and foster homes throughout the Midwest. MSIR dogs live in volunteer foster homes where their medical needs are taken care of and they receive love, care and a little training until they can be placed in their forever home. MSIR is a non-profit organization that is able to care for and find loving homes for Shibas thanks to our generous volunteers and donors. Some of the dogs we save are in danger of being euthanized in shelters, others are released from puppy mills, come in as strays, have medical or behavior issues or are from homes where their owners are not able to care for them anymore. Adoption process

1. Make sure a Shiba is for you. While we love Shibas, we understand that they are not for everyone. We encourage you to read our information page, read books and articles about Shibas, join a Shiba group online, and educate yourself as much as you can about the breed. If you have any questions, please contact us! Talk it over with everyone in your household, and make sure that everyone is on the same page with adoption. Think about your schedule. When will you have time to spend with a dog? Who will be responsible for taking care of the dog? Take a look at your home. Where will the dog sleep? Eat? As you consider a dog, remember that the average life span of a Shiba Inu is 12-17 years. Once you have considered all the aspects of having a loving, active companion, you are ready to think adoption. 2. Fill out our application. Fill out our online application. Please note that MSIR reserves the right to refuse your application for any reason. 3. Wait to hear from an adoption counselor. MSIR keeps applications open in our files for six months. If we find a dog that would be a good match for you, an MSIR adoption coordinator will reach out to you to discuss the ins and outs of that particular dog. We take pride in working to find the perfect match for both the dog and the forever family. We have an all-volunteer team and making these matches can take time, so we ask for your patience in the process. However, it is also important to note that we have many wonderful families interested in adopting from MSIR, and we cannot guarantee that we will find a perfect match for each applicant. 4. Complete a home visit with a MSIR representative. If you are interested in proceeding with a dog in our care, you will be contacted to schedule a home visit. A volunteer will meet with you/your family virtually to discuss bringing a Shiba Inu into your home. We require that all family members are present during the home visit. This is a great time for MSIR to get to know your family, as well as a great time for you to ask any questions that you have. The home visit process helps us determine if your home is the proper environment for the Shiba Inu that you are interested in. 5. Receive approval. If your completed file is accepted following the home visit, you will be approved to bring the dog into your care on a foster to adopt basis. Due to the foster component of our adoption process, you will be asked to complete MSIR foster care and volunteer paperwork. You will connect with the foster home currently caring for the dog to schedule a time to pick up the dog. Now is a great time to finish preparing your home for your new arrival and purchase any items you may need such as a collar, bowls, and food. 6. Take your new pal home! The day has come to pick up your new friend and bring him or her home! Over the next two weeks, you will have time to get to know the dog and get into a routine with the dog. This step gives you time to fully consider your decision and ensure the dog is the right fit for your home. If at any time during the adoption process you feel this is not a good match, please notify MSIR immediately. 7. Finalize the adoption. If everything has gone well after two weeks, and you are ready to make a lifetime commitment to the dog, you will officially sign the adoption paperwork and pay the MSIR adoption fee. We will follow up and provide support to you after the adoption to ensure that your new friend becomes an integral part of your family. Plus, we love to see photos of alums in their forever home! Note: MSIR makes a lifetime commitment to each and every dog that we bring into our care. If there are any issues during the foster to adopt process, or after the dog has been adopted, we will bring the dog back into our care, no questions asked.
