About

Founded in April 1998, Cause for Paws is a small all-volunteer group of friends who love cats and are dedicated to helping stray and abandoned cats find loving, permanent homes through cat adoption. Cause for Paws takes in cats mainly from animal control facilities or from overcrowded shelters and cares for them in volunteer foster homes until they are adopted. Our small group typically takes in the cats that other rescue groups may choose not to accept - the older ones, the shyer ones, the ones needing surgery or other major medical care, the black cats, or the overlooked “Plain Janes.” Still after 20 plus years, we still find great joy in finding that wonderful, loving home for that cat who has been waiting a month, or even two or four years for their very own home.

Adoption process

The cat adoption process typically takes a few days and we do require that adopters be at least 21 years old. After you have found a cat that you may be interested in adopting, the first step is to complete an adoption application. This application asks questions about you such as: have you had pets before; do you live in an apartment, home, dorm; do you rent or own; are there children in the home; do you have other pets. The completed application is reviewed by the foster volunteer to determine if this cat would be a good fit for the home. The foster volunteer will contact the potential adopter to clarify any questions on the application or to have a follow up conversation. If the application is accepted for this particular cat, the foster will meet with the adopter to finalize the adoption by completing the Adoption Agreement. Once the cat goes to their new home, we will follow up with the adopter to make sure everything is going well. If the cat (and adopter and possible other resident pets) is not adapting to their new home, we will accept the cat back into our adoption program if we have a foster volunteer available to take the returned cat. If this is the case and you need to return the cat, we ask that you contact Cause for Paws first and do not bring the cat to an animal control or humane society prior to contacting Cause for Paws (as is stated in the Adoption Agreement that you are signing).
