About

Almost Home Foundation was founded by five animal lovers in March, 2005. The founders felt that by creating this organization, a difference could be made by saving the lives of adoptable dogs and cats. Although the Board of Directors has changed since then, the goal of Almost Home Foundation remains the same. We are an all volunteer, registered, not-for-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to rescuing stray, neglected and abandoned adoptable cats and dogs. Our primary focus is to save those animals needing us most. We also believe in rescuing responsibly. Our focus is to rescue homeless cats and dogs and responsibly place them into permanent, loving homes. We are extremely selective about the dogs we place and temperament testing is done prior to adoption from our program. Our goal is to responsibly place cats and dogs with temperaments that will make loving family pets. Almost Home Foundation is a no-kill shelter and only reserves euthanasia for terminally ill animals or cases of human aggression. Thanks to our network of foster homes, and financial support from fundraising, we’ve been able to reach out to save animals not only throughout Illinois, but in many other states including Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee where they may otherwise be euthanized due to lack of space, time, or money at high-kill shelters. We have also driven many miles to save animals from other states including Mississippi and a South Dakota Indian reservation. Almost Home Foundation does not discriminate based on breed, age, or health of an animal.

Adoption process

Process: 1. Meet with the animal and talk with an Adoption Counselor. 2. Fill out an application. 3. Understand that several applicants may be interested in the animal and it can only go into one home. Almost Home Foundation makes the decision with the best interest of the animal in mind. A decision to place the animal in someone else’s home in no way implies that your home would not be a wonderful home for one of our animals. We are merely trying to make the best decision for the particular animal. Additionally, Talk with the Adoption Coordinator. Please realize that the final decision to place the animal is determined by the Adoption Coordinator and at times, Board members. A Home Check will be done for applicants prior to any final placements being made. Dogs currently owned by applicants must be current on vaccinations, heartworm preventatives, and yearly heartworm testing. On some occasions, we will require dogs to take basic obedience training. Look at your contract for details on return policies. We expect our placements to be lifetime commitments. We cannot condone a “disposable” pet theory. If you must give up your animal, you must return the animal to Almost Home Foundation.
