ADOPT-A-PET is a non-profit, no-kill rescue shelter and adoption organization dedicated to saving the lives of stray, abandoned, displaced or otherwise uncared for homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens and placing them into forever homes. ADOPT-A-PET provides a safe refuge and a second chance for unclaimed animals from municipal pounds as well as other homeless, neglected, abused or injured animals from their rescuers, or pets from owners who can no longer care for them. ADOPT-A-PET was founded in 1981, and has since saved the lives of countless thousands of animals. All adoptable animals at Adopt-A-Pet are found permanent loving homes and remain with us for as long as it takes to find a suitable new loving family. ADOPT-A-PET does not own a shelter facility. All animals are cared for in volunteer foster homes or Wilmette Pet Center, which generously donates temporary housing space, until they are adopted. ADOPT-A-PET provides comprehensive medical care for every animal, including full vet exams, viral and heartworm testing, vaccinations, necessary dental cleanings, treatment and preventatives for internal and external parasites, necessary grooming, and microchips. All animals are spayed or neutered, as well as treated for any other identified medical problems. We go above and beyond to provide treatment, therapy and surgeries to restore health to animals with major, but manageable or fixable, conditions or injuries that might otherwise mean a death sentence at a county pound or other shelter facility. We not only fix broken bones, but mend broken spirits as well. ADOPT-A-PET is available for educational speaking engagements to schools and community groups to promote proper pet care, compassion for animals, and the importance of spaying and neutering.

Adoption process

Browse our posted animals. If you see an animal that interests you and you want more information, send an inquiry with your questions. If you see an animal that you want to apply for, complete an application. If you want to meet an animal that is fostered at Wilmette Pet Center, you do not need to make an appointment. Visit any time during regular store hours. If you want to meet an animal that is housed in private foster care, you will need to complete an application and interview first. Please allow 48 hours for our volunteers to respond to inquiries and application submissions. Once your application has been processed and preliminarily accepted, a Meet & Greet will be set up with an adoption counselor to determine if you and the pet are a match. Final adoption approval rests with the adoption counselor. If the adoption is approved, a second meeting may be set to complete paperwork and take your new pet home.
