Southern States Mastiff Rescue is dedicated to the rescue and placement of Old English Mastiffs with families able and willing to provide a safe, loving, permanent home. Southern States Mastiff Rescue is an all-volunteer non-profit 50l(c)3 organization that was established in 2005. We cover the states of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. We place Old English Mastiffs that have been abandoned, turned in to shelters, strays, and accept dogs into the rescue program from persons unable to care for their mastiff physically and/or financially. We do not accept any dogs that have shown past aggression towards people or other animals. Mastiffs accepted into our organization have a medical assessment, are vetted, altered (spay/neuter), microchipped and placed in pre-approved foster homes until a suitable forever home comes available. Foster homes are a vital part of the program as this gives us the opportunity to assess the dog’s temperament, i.e. how well it gets along with children, other dogs, house training, leash training and level of activity. This information helps us determine the right home for each dog. SSMR can assist you in finding that very special companion. To date, we have rescued and placed over 1300 English Mastiffs.
The steps for adopting a mastiff from SSMR are: Completion of the adoption application; Pay the $20 application fee; A telephone interview with you; A home visit with you; A check of your vet and personal references; Decision by the State Coordinator; Matching you and a dog; Signing an adoption contract and payment of the adoption fee
I sincerely hope this rescue has gotten their act together. I am an experienced mastiff packmate and attempted to rescue Peanut a little over a year ago. I completed my application and submitted along with my 25.00 fee. A couple of weeks later I was informed Peanut had become a foster fail and was no longer available. The thing is, for weeks turning into months, Peanut was still showing as available. I'm sure more people applied, sent in their fees and met the same end. I tried repeatedly to verify exactly what was going on and was unable to receive any explanation. This qualifies in my mind a scam unless SSMR returned all the adoption application fees to each person submitting said fees after Peanut was no longer available. Shame on SSMR as you cost at least one mastiff a great home.
i filled out the adoption form, paid the applicaton fee over 2 months ago. I was informed several days ago the furbaby had been adopted by his foster family. However, all these days later the dog is still showing as available, and i would assume other folks are paying the same application fee with no hope of this dog being available. I have requested clarification several times over several days with no response. I can only assume the worst of this organization.
