Small Breed Rescue of East Tennessee, Inc. (SBRET), is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to finding forever homes for displaced or abandoned small breed dogs. We are also dedicated to educating the public about pet overpopulation, the benefits of spaying/neutering, and the horrors of puppy mills.

Adoption process

If you are interested in adopting one of our rescues, the first step is to complete an adoption application online. You can also complete an adoption application during one of our adoption events. Please note the following: You must be at least 21 years old and live in the East TN area. Current pets must be spayed/neutered, seen yearly by a vet for exams and vaccines, and be on monthly heartworm prevention. This also applies to previous pets owned. To adopt a puppy, someone needs to be home at least part of the day to help with housetraining and socialization. We do not adopt to homes with hidden/electric fences. After we receive your application, we will contact your vet and personal references listed in your application. After we confirm that your past and current pets were examined yearly by a vet, are/were up-to-date on vaccines and heartworm prevention and spayed/neutered, we will contact you to schedule a home visit. During the home visit, we will bring the dog that you are interested in adopting to your home. If all parties agree that the dog might be a good fit for you and your home, we will leave the dog at your home for a 7-day trial period. We will require a completed adoption contract and the adoption fee at the beginning of this trial period. If at the end of 7-day trial period, you feel that the dog is not a good fit for your home, we will take the dog back, return the adoption fee, and void the adoption contract. We recognize the importance of finding a good match between our rescues and potential forever homes and would respect your decision not to proceed with the adoption. Our standard adoption fee is $175 to put toward veterinary and other expenses. The adoption fee will be reduced to $100 for a senior dog 9 years old and older. We hope that by doing this, we can get someone to "take a chance" on one of these sweet older guys that still have a lot of love to give!
