About

Since 1887, we have provided service to the people and animal populations of Santa Barbara County. Our original purpose of prevention, protection and education remains a priority of the Humane Society to this day. A leader in humane education, we adapt our programs to reflect progressive changes to animal welfare policies and to respond to the changing needs of the community. The Humane Society occupies a five-acre site on Overpass Road, serving the community with a shelter, animal adoption services, a spay and neuter clinic, humane education center, boarding kennels, large animal holding center and corral, and inspection and rescue services. We also provide a valuable resource in community education, from classroom presentations to our Critter Camp.

Adoption process

Adopting a Dog - If you see a dog that you are interested in getting to know and possibly adopt, ask to fill out a visitation form so that both of you may get acquainted. Our adoption counselor and/or any shelter staff will be more than happy to answer any questions regarding which ever dog you are interested in. If you are interested in moving forward with a dog adoption after a visit or two you can meet with our adoption counselor to talk more about compatibility as far as what the dog may need and what expectations could look like for the dog. Our adoption counselor provides support, tools, education and answers for any of your questions you may have as far as what goes into a lifetime commitment of owning the particular dog. If there is a case where a dog introduction should be needed, one will be scheduled with you prior to adoption. Sorry, we do not do any holds on any dog. In most cases, we do not do housing checks as we feel it is up to the adopter to connect with and receive approval from his/her landlord before bringing a pet home. Adopting a Cat - If you see a cat that you are interested in getting to know and possibly adopting, ask to fill out a visitation form so that both of you may get acquainted. Our shelter office staff will be more than happy to answer any questions regarding whichever cat you are interested in. If you are interested in moving forward with a cat adoption after a visit or two you can meet with one of our shelter office receptionists to talk more about compatibility as far as what the cat may need and what expectations could be like for the particular cat. Our shelter office provides support, tools, education and answers for any of the questions you may have as far as what goes into a lifetime commitment of owning the particular cat. Sorry, we do not do any holds on any cat. We also, do not do dog/cat meet and greet, however tips on how to introduce a cat to your already existing pets are provided. In most cases, we do not do housing checks as we feel it is up to the adopter to connect with and receive approval from his/her landlord before bringing home a pet.
