The Michiana Humane Society & SPCA has been a leader in animal welfare since 1920, when a group of local women in the Long Beach, Indiana area began to collect small amounts of money to care for stray animals. In 1948, the organization incorporated and evolved into the Michiana Humane Society & SPCA, Inc. Over the years volunteers kept the shelter going with private donations and hard work. The shelter moved to its current location at 722 Indiana Highway 212 in Michigan City in 1997. The shelter was designed to provide plenty of space for our residents, with separate facilities for dogs, cats, and other small animals. A classroom space is used for educational offerings and group activities, and Alynne’s Animal Aid Center, our veterinary suite, provides medical care for the shelter’s animals. Our outside space includes a kennel for dog play adjacent to the building, the three-part Bark Park for meeting dogs, and a three-acre fenced dog park used by the shelter to walk and exercise dogs, and available to the community by membership. We have a full- and part-time staff of 17 people working to care for the animals, manage the facility, and raise funds for our operations. Over 20 volunteers regularly visit the shelter to provide enrichment interaction. The shelter is open 7 days a week to help people meet their new family members, and to give our animals their best chance at a second chance.
1. Come into the shelter to meet our animals! We find the best way to select a pet is to spend time with them. Sometimes what you expect from a photo on Facebook is not what you’ll find when you meet them. We want you to know the good and the challenging about our animals! 2. Fill out an application at the shelter. We do not provide applications in advance, because we want you to meet the pet first. Allow yourself fifteen minutes or so to complete the two page application. 3. You call us the next day for our decision. We review applications during the shelter’s closed hours. Sometimes we will have questions, or you might want to bring your dog to the shelter to see if it gets along with your potential new dog. Once we are all ready, we will schedule an appointment to complete your adoption contract, pay your fees and take your new pet home!
We are HEARTBROKEN and at a loss of words because MHS gave our dwarf hotot bunny, Zig, to someone else! She became our newest family member on December 19, 2019 when we were approved to adopt her (turned in our application to Deanna Hudock on 12-18 & she congratulated me over the phone on 12-19 when I called because I was approved to adopt Zig by Johanna Humbert). We were so excited for her arrival and began the following preparations: my daughter picked out a beautiful name for her, Winnie Whiskers, we ordered her litter box (planned to have her free roam our house and be litter box trained), ordered her a 50LB box of hay / pellets and showed her pictures & video to all our friends / family. We hoped to bring her home for Christmas, as she was my daughter's Christmas present but was told I couldn't take her home until after she was spayed and I'd receive a call when her appointment was scheduled (& they would let me know when I could fill out the remaining paperwork & pay her adoption fee). I waited a couple days but didn't hear from MHS about her appointment so I called and left a message on Dec 21 and emailed them too. I didn't received a response back so I called on Dec 22 and was told her spay appointment wasn't scheduled yet and it would probably be after Christmas. We were sad we wouldn't have her for Christmas but understood how busy the holiday time can be. I still didn't hear from MHS after Christmas so I called and left a message on Dec 27 and emailed on Dec 28. We still didn't hear from them but I thought they would respond any day but actually they never responded to my messages. Yesterday, 1-2-20, I couldnt wait any longer so I called to check on our bunny and see if she'd been scheduled for her spay appointment yet and was told by Johanna Humbert that they made a horrible, unforgivable mistake and gave our bunny to someone else. I broke down in tears and was full of emotion and was at a loss at how they could let this happen. You've taken away our newest family member who was promised to us after her spay; You've broken not only my heart but my daughter's, my son's, my husband's and all the hearts of our friends and family members. You admittedly made a mistake and it is your responsibility to fix this mistake TODAY. Please contact the people you gave her to by mistake and let them know she was already promised to us...please bring Winnie Whiskers home... we love you Winnie!
