About

Looziana Basset Rescue is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to rescuing homeless and unwanted basset hounds in all parishes of Louisiana for the love of the breed. We primarily work with bassets and other hounds but also try to help other animals in need when possible. The dogs that come under our care receive thorough veterinary examinations, with all necessary treatment provided to restore them to good health. Our rescues are temperament tested and socialized in our loving, supportive foster homes or boarding facilities. We have a comprehensive adoption process, which includes home visits and veterinary references. In an average year, we take in 100 dogs and place the majority of them in well-matched, carefully screened permanent homes. Some of the senior basset hounds are placed in permanent foster homes to live out the rest of their lives. We are a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization. Our tax ID# is 72-1515888.

Adoption process

When you've looked at all of the great animals here and chosen one that you might be interested in, you can contact us. We'll get an adoption application to you as quick as a hungry basset. As of March 2012 our adoption fee is $300. This includes spay/neuter, all shots, fecal and worming, microchip, heartworm test and treatment, if necessary, and all other veterinary care that is needed. The average amount that we invest in each dog is around $1000. Because 70% of the dogs that we take into rescue have to go through heartworm treatment, charging less than $300 is not possible. We can sometimes reduce the price for seniors. Looziana Basset Rescue has an extensive adoption process as well as adoption agreement. We check vet references and do home visits prior to an adoption. We require that all of our dogs be on monthly heartworm prevention for the rest of their lives. We require that our dogs live indoors and prefer, but do not always require, a securely fenced yard.
