At Lighthouse Animal Shelter, an all volunteer, 501(c)3 organization, we promote the welfare of animals at risk of euthanasia. We also work with the community to maximize efforts in reducing pet overpopulation. Lighthouse rescues the majority our dogs from high-intake shelters with high euthanasia rates in southern states and organize their safe transport to our New Bedford shelter for adoption. The cats in our care are all local strays or surrenders and our cat program focuses on adult and seniors. We very rarely have kittens.
We do not adopt on a first-come-first-serve basis, but rather by the best match between pet and family, although we will factor in the order of applications if there are equally good matches. We want to be sure that we are placing pets in homes where the entire family will be happy: Our Lighthouse dog, all humans in the home and any pets you already have. After you have submitted an application for a dog or a cat in our care, we will begin to process your application by confirming your housing, calling your vet reference (if you have one) and calling your personal references. The time it takes for our volunteers to completely process an application will vary depending on how quickly we can get in touch with these references. We will sometimes have questions along the way and will reach out to you as they arise. When performing a vet reference, we are looking for consistent wellness exams, heartworm testing (for dogs), purchase of preventatives, and proof of spay/neuter (unless recommended otherwise by a vet). All animals in the home must be up to date on at minimum a rabies vaccine (unless recommended otherwise by a vet) before a Lighthouse animal can be adopted. When your application is approved, we will reach out to you to set up a time for you to visit with our animals. All appointments at this time are limited to approved applicants only so the first step toward adoption through Lighthouse is to submit an application. The application is the first step toward us getting to know your family and your schedule. We want everyone involved in the adoption to be happy. If you have any questions or concerns while integrating your new pet into your family, please reach out to us and let us know.
