About

Last Chance at Life is an all-breed rescue and adoption organization. We have a special fondness for Boxers, birds, and other dogs in need of medical care. Our focus is helping the animals in San Diego County, and we oftentimes, when space and resources are available, will pull animals from outside of San Diego County. Our rescues come to us from local shelters and humane societies, owners who can no longer properly care for them, and sometimes through other rescue groups. Most often these animals are facing euthanasia because of medical or behavioral needs. Because of this, we are truly their Last Chance at Life. The majority of our adoptable pets are in foster homes while others (new arrivals, those awaiting medical recovery, those awaiting foster/forever homes) are cared for at our Adoption Center in Oceanside, CA. All of our pets receive the very best in medical care from the doctors and staff at Mission Animal and Bird Hospital. #TeamLCAL is committed to offering the best possible care available to our pets in need while awaiting adoption into forever homes!

Adoption process

Not every pet will fit into your lifestyle. Our adoption counselors will ask you many questions to determine which pet will do well in your home and which will not. This way we can be sure the pet you get will be the pet you want … to love for its lifetime! Before we schedule any meet-and-greets, we will ask that you complete an adoption application FIRST… which includes: Information about the pet you may be interested in adopting; Questions about your past pet experiences and expectations for caring for this pet; Approval to have the type of pet you are interested in adopting from landlord or rental agencies if you rent or lease your home, condo or apartment. This includes HOA approvals as well; A letter of reference from your veterinarian. Since some of our pets have had serious medical conditions, we want to ensure that you have a commitment to provide the ongoing care they may need; A home visit by one of our volunteers to assist/ensure that your home is indeed set up to bring a dog or bird home. Please understand that we deal with homeless or unwanted animals. Many of our animals come from unknown backgrounds through local shelters. Most have medical or behavioral concerns that we have addressed as well as providing their well care. The adoption process may seem time-consuming, but we wish to maximize an animal’s chance for a successful, permanent adoption. Adopting a companion pet is a major consideration and responsible pet ownership demands a considerable commitment. All we ask in return is that you love and care for this pet for its lifetime and make a donation that will allow us to help the next pet in need. Please also understand that ALL of our coordinators, handlers, assistants work other jobs and do the rescue work on a VOLUNTEER basis during their open hours throughout the day/week. Please be patient if you don’t hear back from us right away. If you haven’t received an email response within 48 hours, feel free to reach out again (info@lastchanceatlife.org) as sometimes emails just don’t land in our inbox.
