L. A. County Animal Care & Control: Downey Animal Care Center

Downey, CA 90242

About

The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control is one of the largest and most progressive animal control agencies in the United States. DACC has adopted the philosophy of Socially Conscious Animal Sheltering at our seven animal care centers. We serve unincorporated Los Angeles County and 44 contract cities with a combined total population of over 3 million residents. We cover more than 3,400 square miles of cities, deserts, beaches, and mountains; from the Antelope Valley in the north to the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the south, as far east as the border of San Bernardino County, and west to Thousand Oaks. We provide animal control and rescue services in our service areas 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our animal care centers offer a wide variety of potential pets for you to choose. Most of our animals are either strays or pets turned in by owners who are no longer able to keep them. The many benefits of adopting from a County Animal Care Center include low‑cost spaying/neutering, a free veterinary checkup, the peace of mind knowing that your new pet has received its initial vaccinations against contagious diseases, and the satisfaction of having saved the life of a shelter animal. Besides patrolling busy streets, back roads, beaches, and canyons for lost, injured, and abandoned animals, our animal control officers also conduct humane investigations when animal cruelty is suspected, provide emergency rescues during natural disasters, enforce all State and local animal control laws, conduct animal licensing (canvassing) inspections; and inspect and license commercial animal facilities.

Adoption process

When you arrive at the animal care center and you see an animal you want to adopt, write down its animal ID number (posted on the outside of the animal’s kennel) and ask a volunteer or staff member to check its availability. You may place a Commitment to Adopt on the animal. CTA’s are only taken in person at the animal care centers. Please note that we hold all stray animals for four days (in addition to the day of its arrival) in order to give pet owners an opportunity to look for their lost pet. Once an animal has passed its holding period, it will be made available for adoption. CTA’s may be placed on animals that have yet to pass the stray period so that when the stray period passes, it can immediately be adopted.

I plan on doing a lot of research to find out why so many beautiful/adoptable dogs and cats are being euthanized at such a high rate at the Downey location. It just isn’t right! There are amazing rescues and people who are working around the clock trying to find rescues and fosters and adopters for the beautiful dogs and cats at your location. Is it true you get paid for each animal you euthanize? Is that why you don’t appear to be trying to help these precious animals get adopted? I’m retired and I have the time to research and get to the bottom of what is really going on at the Downey shelter and others.
