The Houston Humane Society is dedicated to, and working towards, ending cruelty, abuse and the overpopulation of animals while providing the highest quality of life to those brought to us for care. We have dogs, cats, horses, and an assortment of other animals ready to be adopted into their new forever homes!
Please check in at the front desk using your phone. Once you are checked in, please feel free to walk around and view our adoptable animals. Our adoption staff will be happy to answer any questions that you may have. Once at the lobby, cats and kittens will be located to your right, and puppies and small dogs to your left. Straight back through the double doors you will find 5 kennel buildings we call “cabanas”, each with a different color, and full of dogs of all ages and sizes waiting to meet you! If you would like to see a dog located in a cabana, please communicate the color and animal ID of the dog to one of our adoption coordinators. We require all future adopters to bring with them the following documents: 1) lease agreement if you are renting 2) a proof of address 3) your driver's license or valid ID 4) Vet records of animals currently owned or living in the same residence as the applicant. Records must show pet(s) have all their shots including a current rabies and distemper vaccine, current heartworm test and be on heartworm prevention. If your current pet is not up to date on his/her shots, this might be an impediment to getting approved for adoption. We have a low-cost Wellness Clinic in case you want to bring your pet in to get his/her vaccines updated. Having ALL these 4 previous documents (electronically or in paper) with you when visiting our Adoption Center will speed up your adoption approval process and will allow you to take your new pet home that same day if cleared by our adoption coordinators. Incomplete applications will take longer and then there is a risk that someone else with a complete application could adopt your desired pet! Currently there is a limit of 3 Meet & Greets per person. When you’ve found the one or two…You will be required to “Meet & Greet” with the animal. Once you have decided on your newest family member, please go back to the lobby and speak with an adoption counselor to finalize the adoption process. Please note that some dogs and cats are ready to go home right away, however, others may need a visit to our Animal Wellness Clinic before they go. If your chosen pet needs to see our vet, know that our clinic and adoption personnel will make sure your new dog or cat gets the care they need in a timely and efficient manner.
