About

The Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center™ is a private rehabilitation and adoption facility for abused and neglected horses, ponies, donkeys and mules that have been removed from their owners by law enforcement authorities. Harmony also serves as a central hub where horses from humane societies and rescue groups in the Midwest and the southwestern United States can receive training and rehoming. In March 2018, Harmony began opening its doors to privately owned Colorado horses in need of rehoming. Since Harmony opened in 2012, more than 1,800 horses have been helped. Located near Franktown, Colo., the 168-acre facility includes three sizable, well-equipped barns for intake, training and adoptions, 26 pastures and turnouts, two indoor riding arenas and an education center. Our knowledgeable, professional staff and dedicated volunteers provide safe shelter, nutritious feed, top-quality care and training to the equines at the center. When formerly abused and neglected horses and other equines arrive at the Harmony Equine Center, they’re given immediate medical care to relieve their suffering. Once they have been permanently surrendered to the center, they are evaluated for rehabilitation and potential adoption. The evaluation criteria follow a set of standards established by local equine and animal welfare professionals. They take into account the animals’ medical and behavioral needs, their long-term prognosis for quality of life and their potential for adoption. Horses that are candidates for rehabilitation receive veterinarian-approved treatment plans that help them gain weight and regain their health. Gentle, structured training programs help them overcome fear memories, develop new social skills and learn to trust. Rehabilitation may take a few weeks or many months.

Adoption process

Apply online or download the adoption application and submit by mail to 5540 E. Hwy. 86, Franktown, CO 80116. You can also bring the completed application with you when you visit the center, or fill one out upon arrival. Adoption fees range from $100 to $1,000. Fees are based on the training level of the equine. Our adoption fees don’t come close to covering all the costs of caring for the abused and neglected equines that come to us each year. Generous donations make up the difference and allow us to provide vital care and second chances. Thank you for your support. Before the adoption process can begin, we’ll ask you to agree to the following: You will not sell the animal for slaughter. You will not use it for breeding purposes. You will permit us to visit the facility where the animal will be maintained. We believe in full transparency. We promise to represent our animals honestly, based on what we know of their past circumstances, what we observe and what we are able to accomplish while they are in our care. We’ll make every effort to match you with the animal you want to adopt; however, we can’t guarantee any animal’s future health or behavior. What you’ll need to bring: Application - If you have not already submitted your completed adoption application via one of the above methods, please bring it with you to the center. ID - At the point of adoption, we’ll need a valid photo ID with your current address. If your ID does not have your current address, please also bring along another type of proof, such as a utility bill, water bill or vehicle registration.
